Gertjan Bult has been involved with Cadasto for many years – first as a developer, then as Project Lead and now as Manager Development. While he still loves writing code, he now devotes the majority of his time to supporting his team and bridging the gap between team members and key stakeholders.

Since Gertjan combines hands-on technical expertise with a big-picture perspective on Cadasto, we sat down with him to discuss where the platform is headed.

The Benefits for Developers

While we often discuss the architectural advantages of an open platform such as Cadasto, we wanted to dive into the tangible benefits for developers. “The beauty of an open platform to store and model your care data means that medical app developers can truly focus on their own core business: the functionality of their applications”, Gertjan explains. “We handle the entire medical database and data models, eliminating a major layer of complexity. This lowers the barrier to entry, making it far easier for new developers to enter the medical software space.”

Does using an openEHR platform require deep technical expertise? Gertjan says it is more approachable than people think: “Having basic knowledge of openEHR compositions is helpful, but that information is far easier to access today than it used to be.”

“I hope that healthcare IT will finally move beyond temporary fixes for the issue of data availability and adopt a true, longterm solution.”

Making openEHR More Accessible

Cadasto actively invests time and resources into making openEHR knowledge readily available to anyone getting started. Gertjan is particularly enthusiastic about some of our new developer tools: “Our Founder and Architect Sebastian has already created an openEHR AI agent that he made available open source. You can ask it questions about creating templates and archetypes, or use it to validate your compositions and corresponding CDR responses. It’s practical, user-friendly, and makes expert knowledge instantly accessible. If you’re interested in openEHR, I highly recommend checking it out!”

And this is just the tip of the iceberg – Cadasto is developing additional tools to simplify working with our Clinical Data Repository. “I am especially looking forward to our upcoming SDK update. This will make it even easier to connect to our APIs in a standardised way.”

Beyond Temporary Fixes

Looking ahead, what are Gertjan’s hopes for Cadasto? “With Cadasto, we are in the business of changing the very foundation of care data. That takes time, but it is encouraging to see our vision gain momentum. I hope that healthcare IT will finally move beyond temporary fixes for the issue of data availability and adopt a true, longterm solution. And when that happens, we naturally want to be the best and biggest on the market! ;)”
